NE Chapter 23-1201 – County Attorney Duties & Services
The Nebraska Attorney General is the chief lawyer for the state, representing Nebraska in matters of litigation, enforce the laws, and file suits on behalf of Nebraska residents. Nebraska’s District Attorneys are referred to as “County Attorneys,” of which there are 93 – one for each county in Nebraska.
As the front line prosecutor, County Attorneys handle:
- Felonies
- Misdemeanors
- Traffic Offenses
- Juvenile Court
- Specialized cases
- Multi – Jurisdiction task forces
- Crime prevention programs
- Environmental violations
In the Civil capacity, the County Attorney:
- Advises the County Board and other officials
- Represents the County in civil actions
- Processes mental health cases
- Determines inheritance taxes
- Active enforcement of Child Support Orders
- Functions as County Coroner
